                         Merritt Island NWR

Background

The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1963 as a 140,000 acre buffer zone around Kennedy Space Center. The refuge is owned jointly by NASA and the Fish and Wildlife Service. Approximately half of the refuge is saltmarsh with the remainder comprised of coastal dunes and scrub, pine flatwoods and hammocks dominated by hardwoods and palms.

Over 500,000 people visit the refuge annually; it is one of the premier birding locations in North America. See some of the birds here and some of MINWR’s beautiful landscapes here.
